San Marcos is a city in the North County region of the San Diego County. It has a population of 83,781 according to the 2010 census. This is also the place where you can find the California State University San Marcos, one of the most renowned universities in the region. You will find some interesting attractions here, such as the Lake San Marcos, widely popular and extremely important for the local community.

San Marcos, CA history

The origin of the city is quite peculiar. It seems that the mission flocks were robbed by native Americans and they had to get those flocks back, and while pursuing them they actually found a fertile valley. That valley was eventually named Los Vallecitos de San Marcos, hence the name of the city. More and more immigrants came to the city during the 1880s and the settlement grew quite a bit. At the middle of the decade there was a post office, a feed store, blacksmith and even a local newspaper. Needless to say, there were no podiatrists back then, though they were sorely needed.

In recent years, San Marcos has experienced enormous growth. Its popularity has increased quite a bit in the past few decades thanks to its great location and astounding vistas. Ever since the 1990s, the population tripled and it continues to grow quite a bit.

The local climate is Mediterranean and semi-arid, just like most of the region. However, the presence of a lake in the region does make the region less arid when compared to others. There is some rainfall here, but this arrives primarily during winter.

In regard to education, the region is quite literate as it boasts some of the most pioneering schools in the region. You have the San Marcos Unified School district, the Palomar College, the Cal State San Marcos and the University of St Augustine.

The city is also known for having some really good eateries, especially the Old California Restaurant row which is full of great restaurants for you to check out. There are also lots of golf courses, so if you like this sport you can have a whole lot of fun.

Recently San Marcos has opened up quite a few open spaces and parks. You can also check out the Williams Barn here, as well as a plethora of historic houses that are maintained by the San Marcos Historical Society.

If you are very passionate about old Californian history and want to explore some of the most interesting locales in the San Diego county, then San Marcos is definitely right up your alley. And if you’re a resident, then you have it all out your backdoor, so to speak. Also, if you happen to be a resident of San Marcos and are in need of a podiatrist, then why not give Dr. Berthelsen a call and schedule and appointment? You’ll be happy you did!
